WALK THE LONELY CITY
Walk The Lonely City, Valerie Caesar, 2024.
“THE LONELY CITY | December 1, 2024
every day, i take a walk. i say it’s to move and be active, but if i’m honest, there is something i am seeking on my routine strolls — a connection with the natural world, by way of the trees, the people, the wind. this image, devoid of most of those things, offers insight into why i rarely feel nourished by these walks. instead the hunger and yearning for connection only grows stronger.”
I created this illustration using a fountain brush pen and watercolor. The inspiration was an intersection in my neighborhood that is filled with commerce and traffic, but somehow feels lonely and empty. In this depiction, I exaggerated the expanse of asphalt to emphasize the emptiness, similar to the void of outer space.
