UNTITLED (AT GRANNY’S)
Untitled (At Granny’s), Valerie Caesar, 2025.
I was making a chocolate cake made from black beans (I gotta say, I’m not going to make a chocolate cake in any other way ever again. The moistness was unparalleled!) and was charmed by the haphazard array of ingredients splayed on the counter. This sketch was inspired by that site, but the title was derived by the nostalgia of those old school brands — Arm & Hammer, Davis Baking soda, and Hersey’s Cocoa, with their vintage, bold, red-yellow-and-brown branding. I’ve been seeing these labels all my life, notably in my grandmother’s kitchen. I’ve come full circle in so many beautiful ways. The other ingredients and tools also recalled those colors in their own holistic way. It’s a simple sketch, but one with lots of heart.
