OBJECTS OF MY DISTRACTION
(work in progress)
Objects Of My Distraction (work-in-progress), Valerie Caesar, 2025.
By now you probably know that the pastel brush has become my favorite, and I’ve used in the last dozen or so of my illustrations. I’ve also been obsessing over collage illustrations of everyday household objects ever since I completed this collage drawing while visiting my parents last Christmas. I really love this latest one, featuring objects that are found on my coffee table. It wasn’t until after I completed this that I realized that each object represents something I use to distract myself from the stressors of the day and the world — a home survival kit, if you will. And I do — all the time. Here I’m playing with filling the plane in a textural way that doesn’t prescribe each object’s relationship to the other. I have a feeling I’m going to be doing more with this kind of collaged objects style in general, and perhaps with these objects in particular. I can see adding to this so that it’s super busy, or using the distinct objects for poster art. Stay tuned…
