HOW TO WASTE TIME: A Poster ‘Zine
How To Waste Time: A Poster Zine (zine side), and Objects of My Distraction (poster side), Valerie Caesar, 2025.
I’ve been hankering to create a ‘zine for the longest, but as with many of my most exciting (to me) ideas, I procrastinate starting, because I’m overthinking things. My compulsion for wanting my first attempt (at anything) to be the best thing I’ve ever done or created often stops me from even taking the first step.
So I decided to approach this project without expectations of greatness, and just as an experiment using things I’ve already created. I love ‘zines that unfold to become a poster, so that’s what I did here with this. I was really digging the pastel objects created for Objects Of My Distraction, and I figured they’d be a juicy addition to the ‘zine side as well as make for a lovely poster. The full (poster) size of this zine is A1 (23.4 x 33.1 inches) and it folds to paper size A4 (8.3 X 11.7 inches), or about the size of a sheet of printer paper, so there’s a nice amount of surface space for both large illustrations as well as nice chunks of paragraph text. The possibilities are endless!
Here’s an animated image that depicts how the ‘zine unfolds.
As for the theme of this particular ‘zine, I was of course inspired by the illustrated images, which represent the ways I spent time doing nothing. I wanted the random yet oddly specific and personal nature of the objects to inform the idea of cultivating a personal relationship with time that is outside of meaning to anyone but you, and whose only purpose is delivering pleasure in the form of leisure. That can be harder than it seems. For me, it means endless cups of coffee and tea, puffing indulgently, listening to music, entreating the gods, staying moisturized, feeling cute, and being comfortable as I pad around the house and lounge on the couch, scrolling endlessly and flipping channels.
Design-wise, it was fun to rearrange the images in dynamic poses reminiscent of magazine spreads, and to play with manipulating the title text with sleepy, droopy, Dali-esque features. I’ll admit I didn’t spend much time on the copy, but including the blocks of text made me thing of how I want to use this format to animate some writing I’ve already done. (That writing was actually the initial inspiration for the creation of a ‘zine series, but because it’s a more serious enterprise, and one that I’d eventually like to share with the world, it was hemming me up from starting.) Image and text layout is such a delicious world to explore, and I’m just getting started!
