BLACK ICONS

(WORK IN PROGRESS)

Black Icons, Valerie Caesar, 2024.

I created this image just playing around with different colors and textures for an upcoming project. I needed to choose images at random for the application of various textures, so I figured why not select items that go together in a loose concept? I recognize that lots of people are triggered by the association of Black people with watermelon, but while I respect the existence of that particular trauma, I don’t share it, as I am not shamed by the historical connection. (I feel similarly about fried chicken, which as I type this I realize was a lost opportunity here! I might have to do a part two…) Watermelon is the best fruit! And a symbol of resistance and liberation! And, damnit, so naturally stylist, like zebra. I love the color scheme and the boldly electric contrast of the cool background tones with the fluorescent orange accents. I’m thinking of doing something more concrete with this concept so I’ll just consider this a work in progress.
